A rent receipt is an official acknowledgement issued by a landlord to a tenant confirming the receipt of rent payment for a specified period. In India, rent receipts serve as legal proof of rent payment and are essential documents for claiming House Rent Allowance (HRA) exemption under the Income Tax Act.
Under Section 10(13A) of the Income Tax Act, salaried employees living in rented accommodation can claim HRA exemption on their taxable income. To avail this benefit, employees must submit rent receipts to their employer or while filing Income Tax Returns. If your annual rent exceeds Rs.1,00,000, the landlord's PAN number is also mandatory on the receipt.
A valid rent receipt protects both the tenant and the landlord - it confirms the transaction has taken place and provides a paper trail for any future disputes regarding payment history.
