Most international exchanges display account balances in US Dollars. But your real purchasing power, your tax liability under Indian law, and your actual gains are all denominated in rupees. The USD/INR exchange rate fluctuates daily, which means your portfolio value in rupees can change even on days when crypto prices stay flat.
This tool shows both values simultaneously so you always have the full picture.
In India, profits from selling or swapping Virtual Digital Assets (VDAs) - which includes cryptocurrencies - are taxed at a flat 30% under Section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act, plus a 4% health and education cess. This applies regardless of holding period.
A 1% Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) under Section 194S applies on crypto transfers exceeding a threshold in a financial year. Indian exchanges deduct this automatically. For international exchanges, you may need to handle TDS compliance yourself.
Losses from one crypto asset cannot be offset against gains from another. Each transaction is taxed independently.
