  • This is an approximate monthly estimate using telescopic slab rates and one representative fixed charge. Actual bills may vary.
  • It does not model bi-monthly billing (Tamil Nadu, Kerala), the KSEB 250-unit non-telescopic cliff, free-unit subsidies, per-kW fixed charges, fuel adjustment (FAC/FPPCA), electricity duty, or other taxes.
  • Slab rates are subject to change by state electricity regulatory commissions.

TL;DR

An Indian electricity bill is the energy charge (your units billed through the state slab rates) plus a monthly fixed charge, set by each State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC). This tool gives an approximate monthly estimate for 10 states using their current SERC tariff orders (rates as of June 2026). It excludes fuel adjustment (FAC/FPPCA/PPAC), electricity duty and subsidies, and does not model bi-monthly billing (Tamil Nadu, Kerala), the KSEB 250-unit non-telescopic cliff, or Telangana's consumption-category slabs - so your actual DISCOM bill will differ; always verify with your provider.

How to Calculate Your Electricity Bill in India

Electricity tariffs in India vary significantly by state and are set by State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs). Most states use a slab-based tariff system where the per-unit rate increases as consumption increases - the first 100 units may cost Rs.3 per unit while consumption above 500 units may cost Rs.8-10 per unit.

Your electricity bill includes the energy charge (based on units consumed), fixed charges (a monthly base charge regardless of consumption), fuel adjustment charges, electricity duty (a state tax), and sometimes wheeling charges for grid use.

These are simplified residential energy-charge slabs for estimation, taken from each state's current State Electricity Regulatory Commission tariff order. They exclude fixed charges (shown separately in the calculator), fuel adjustment (FAC/FPPCA/PPAC), electricity duty, and state subsidies, and do not model bi-monthly billing (Tamil Nadu, Kerala), the non-telescopic repricing of Kerala bills above 250 units, or consumption-category schedules (Telangana). Always verify with your electricity board.

State Tariff Sources

Each state's rates are taken from its current State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) tariff order, verified in June 2026:

Rates change with each SERC tariff cycle and exclude fuel adjustment, duty and subsidies. Verify the current tariff with your distribution company before acting on the estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the electricity bill calculator work?+
Enter your appliances, their wattage, and daily usage hours. The calculator estimates your monthly electricity consumption in units (kWh) and approximate bill amount.
Why does my actual bill differ from the estimate?+
Actual bills include fixed charges, taxes, and slab-based tariffs that vary by state and provider. This calculator estimates consumption-based costs.
Can I use this to reduce my electricity bill?+
Yes. By seeing which appliances consume the most power, you can optimize usage and reduce your monthly bill.
