How is this calculated?

Daylight from sunrise to sunset is divided into 15 equal parts; Abhijit Muhurat is the 8th part, centred on the midpoint of the day. Its length is therefore one fifteenth of the day length and changes with the season - it is not a fixed 48 minutes.

Displayed times are rounded to the nearest minute of the local clock (ties go to the later minute), and the duration is rounded from the exact window independently - so on days where the true length sits near a half minute, the printed end minus start can differ from the printed duration by one minute.

Sunrise and sunset are computed with a Meeus/NOAA-style algorithm with the standard 50' refraction convention, the same engine as our Rahu Kaal tool.

What is Abhijit Muhurat?

Abhijit (“the unconquered”) is the window centred on midday, traditionally held auspicious for beginning most undertakings - the reasoning in the tradition being that the Sun at its height overcomes obstacles. Unlike Rahu Kaal, which is a window to avoid, Abhijit is a window people seek out when no better muhurta has been worked out for the task.

It is defined solar-geometrically: divide the time from your local sunrise to your local sunset into 15 equal parts, and Abhijit is the 8th - the middle one, sitting symmetrically around the moment halfway between sunrise and sunset. That midpoint is usually not 12:00 on the clock, which is one of the two reasons published timings differ from city to city and day to day. The other is that daylight itself stretches and shrinks with the season.

How the timing is calculated - and why published sources disagree

Published descriptions of Abhijit do not agree with each other. On a single day, for a single city, one page of search results described the same window as roughly 51 minutes (one fifteenth of that day’s daylight, stated by two sources), exactly 48 minutes as a fixed rule, and 40 minutes - twice. One widely-read source even disagrees with itself: its worked example correctly derives 11:36 to 12:24 for a 6:00-to-18:00 day (48 minutes, which is 720 / 15) and then restates that same window as 11:40 to 12:20, which is 40 minutes and does not follow from its own arithmetic.

So here is this page’s convention, stated plainly enough to check:

  • Daylight = your city’s sunset minus sunrise, computed astronomically for the date.
  • Divide it into 15 equal parts; Abhijit is the 8th part.
  • Equivalently: the window is centred on the midpoint between sunrise and sunset, and its length is daylight / 15.
  • Displayed times are rounded to the nearest minute of the local clock, with ties going to the later minute. The duration is rounded from the exact window, independently of the endpoints.

The fixed-48-minutes belief is the equal-day special case of this rule, and the “24 minutes either side of midday” phrasing is the same special case in different words. On real days the computed window at the same city ran from 43 minutes in winter to 54 at the solstice. Where other calculators publish a differing time, the difference is almost always their convention, their sunrise model, or their rounding - which is why we state all three of ours.

Wednesday and Manglik activities - a caveat, not a suppression

The contemporary panchang source we verified states that Abhijit is “not suitable” on Wednesdays, and likewise not for Manglik activities such as marriage and Upanayana ceremonies. Treat both as traditional suitability advisories attributed to that source: the same source computes and displays a perfectly normal window on Wednesdays, and this tool does the same. When the date you pick is a Wednesday, the result card says so next to the window; nothing is hidden or blanked. Whether the caveat governs your plans is a judgement for you and your tradition, not for a calculator.

Is Abhijit Muhurat always 48 minutes (11:36 to 12:24)?

No. 48 minutes is what the rule gives only when daylight is exactly 12 hours: 720 minutes divided by 15 is 48, which places the window 24 minutes either side of a 12:00 midday - 11:36 to 12:24. On longer days it is longer and on shorter days shorter. Published descriptions disagree with each other here: on a single day and city we found the same window stated as about 51 minutes, exactly 48, and 40 minutes on one page of results. This page states its convention precisely so you can check it: (sunset - sunrise) / 15, 8th part, centred on the midpoint.

Is Abhijit Muhurat auspicious on Wednesday?

Is Abhijit Muhurat the same as Abhijit Nakshatra?

No. Abhijit Muhurat is a solar window around midday, defined from sunrise and sunset. Abhijit Nakshatra is a 28th star segment between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana, used mainly in muhurta astrology; mainstream natal practice uses 27 nakshatras. Which dates and cities does this support?

Any city in our list, for dates from 1900-01-02 to 2032-12-30. The limits are measured, not arbitrary: they are the dates for which every sunrise and sunset this tool consumes stays inside the span where our solar and delta-T data is accuracy-checked. Outside the range the tool refuses rather than guessing. At extreme polar latitudes, on dates when the sun does not both rise and set, there is no sunrise-to-sunset window and the tool says so instead of inventing one.

What is Nishita Kaal?

Nishita Kaal is the midnight counterpart of Abhijit - a short window centred on solar midnight, used in some traditions for specific rituals. This page computes only the midday Abhijit window.

Sources and method

  • The 15-part rule follows the observed contemporary implementation on the leading panchang sites, verified against captured output for 14 dates across a year (accessed 8 August 2026). We deliberately cite no classical text for this rule: works such as Muhurta Chintamani are named for muhurta generally, but naming a work is not verifying a rule in it, and we have not verified this one against a printed edition.
  • Against those 14 captured windows, this implementation matches the displayed duration exactly on all 14 and every endpoint within one minute. The residue combines the source’s unstated display convention with small differences between sunrise models; the two cannot be separated from the captures alone.
  • Sunrise and sunset: Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, 2nd ed., 1998 (the astronomia implementation), with the standard 50' refraction convention - the same engine as our Rahu Kaal tool.
