The Karakamsha (Karakamsa) is the navamsa sign occupied by the Atmakaraka - the graha with the highest degree within its sign, read in Jaimini astrology as the significator of the soul. Sanjay Rath's definition is the one this tool follows: the karakamsa is the navamsa sign where the Atmakaraka is placed, called the karakamsa-lagna or seat of the real self. It is a derived reference point, not a separate observation: everything comes from the same planetary positions as your birth chart, re-read through the D9.
Two clarifications keep the term precise. The Karakamsha is not the Navamsa Lagna - the D9 ascendant is its own thing, computed from the rising degree, while the Karakamsha follows the Atmakaraka. And it is a SIGN, not a house: practice treats it as a reference lagna from which signs are counted, which is why derived readings like the Ishta Devata speak of the 12th from the Karakamsha.
Step 1 - the Atmakaraka. Rank the grahas by degree within sign: the highest is the Atmakaraka. This tool uses the 8-karaka scheme by default - Rahu joins the pool with its degree reversed (30 minus its degree, because the nodes move backward), and Ketu is excluded - with a 7-karaka toggle for the K.N. Step 2 - the Atmakaraka's navamsa. Each sign spans nine navamsa divisions of 3 deg 20 min; the Atmakaraka's exact longitude places it in one of them, and that division maps to a D9 sign. Our Navamsa Calculator shows the whole D9 chart this step reads from.
Step 3 - the Karakamsha. The Atmakaraka's D9 sign IS the Karakamsha. The tool then lists the D9 context around it: planets occupying the same navamsa sign, and planets casting graha drishti on it from their own D9 signs. When the Atmakaraka itself is too close to call - an exact tie, or a gap finer than engine precision - every candidate is computed as its own branch, never silently resolved.
The default here is the 8-karaka scheme: seven classical grahas plus Rahu with its degree reversed, the convention P.V.R. Narasimha Rao's Jaimini lessons and JHora use. The 7-karaka toggle computes the always-7 mainstream map of the K.N. Rao / Neelakantha lineage: Rahu excluded, Pitrukaraka dropped. The two schemes can name different Atmakarakas - when the reversed Rahu tops the pool, the whole Karakamsha moves - which is why the toggle re-runs the entire derivation and labels the scheme in use.
One more variant deserves a name so nobody wonders why other software differs: the conditional scheme (Parashara as read by K.N. Rao), where the karaka count depends on degree ties, uses a different role map altogether. It is documented here as a distinct variant and not computed in this version.
The tool lists two kinds of D9 context. Occupants: planets sharing the Karakamsha's navamsa sign with the Atmakaraka (the nodes count as occupants, as in the classical 12th-house reading). Aspecting planets: grahas casting graha drishti on the Karakamsha, evaluated sign-to-sign on the D9 - every graha aspects the 7th from itself, Mars adds the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Jaimini texts are also read with rasi drishti (sign aspect), notably by Sanjay Rath; that fork is disclosed and deliberately not computed here, so the two conventions are never blended into an untraceable hybrid.
What the tool does NOT do with this context is interpret it. The Jaimini Upadesa Sutras attach specific significations to each graha in the swamsa; applying that catalog to a person is interpretive work this calculator deliberately leaves to qualified practitioners. The output is the placement list itself - which planets, which signs, which aspect geometry - with every fragile case flagged.
Three different uncertainties sit between a birth time and a confident Karakamsha, and this tool checks each one separately rather than blurring them into one warning. First, the Atmakaraka ranking: if two grahas' degrees differ by less than about 0.0833 deg (roughly 5 arcminutes), engine precision cannot settle the order, and every candidate branch is shown. Second, the rashi sign cusp: an Atmakaraka within about 0.3 deg of a D1 sign boundary might actually sit in the adjacent sign, which wraps its degree and can hand the Atmakaraka role to a different graha entirely. Third, the navamsa cusp: any graha within about 0.5 deg of a 3-deg-20-min division edge - the Atmakaraka itself, an occupant, or an aspecting planet - could flip its D9 sign and change what the list shows.
The three thresholds are different sizes because they measure different things: a relative ranking error, an absolute sign-placement error, and a divisional-edge sensitivity. Each flag on the result names which check fired.
Both spellings are in wide use - Karakamsa is the closer transliteration of the Sanskrit, Karakamsha reflects the pronunciation - and sources split roughly along lineage lines.
