What is KP astrology?

KP, Krishnamurti Paddhati, is the stellar system of Vedic astrology developed by K.S. Krishnamurti (1908-1972). It cuts each of the 27 nakshatras into nine unequal subs in the proportions of the Vimshottari dasha, so every degree of the zodiac has a sign lord, a star lord and a sub lord, and it reads the houses through their Placidus cusps. Where a kundli asks which sign a house is in, KP asks which planet rules the sub its cusp falls in, and which planets signify that house.

That makes KP very sensitive to the birth time: a cusp crosses a sub boundary every few minutes. This page shows the time each cusp's sub lord holds, computed from the cusp's own motion, so you can see how much your birth time can be off before a table changes.

How do you read a KP chart?

  1. Find each cusp's lords. The cusps table gives each cusp's sign, star, sub and sub-sub lords; the worked lookup under your chart shows the steps for your Ascendant.
  2. Check how firm the sub lord is. The last two columns say how many minutes of birth time each cusp's sub lord holds. A short margin means a small error in the recorded time changes it.
  3. Read a house through its significators. KP practitioners take a house's significators at four levels, strongest first: the planets in the stars of its occupants, its occupants, the planets in the star of its owner, and its owner. Rahu and Ketu also act for the planets they are conjoined with and for their sign and star lords.
  4. Use the ruling planets for the moment of judgment. KP takes the ruling planets when and where a question is judged, not at birth: pick the place and press the button for this moment.

This page computes the tables and explains how practitioners read them. It gives no verdicts, predictions or remedies.

How accurate is this KP calculator?

We checked it the strict way. The requirements were written first; then a set of 54 test charts was drawn and committed before any comparison, and it was never used to tune anything. It spans births from 1921 to 2031, from the equator to 66.45 degrees north and south, with clock changes, negative UTC offsets and 27 edge cases built where tables break: cusps and planets within seconds of arc of a sign, star, pada, sub or sub-sub boundary, planets on a house cusp, planets at or near their stations, and a cusp where its geometry is most sensitive. Each was graded against Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03, run outside this site. All 93,008 checks passed.

We also checked 6 of the charts by hand in Jagannatha Hora 8.0, set to the same KP settings. It identified the same KP ayanamsa on all 6, its planets agreed on all 6 and its mean node on 5, and all 156 star, sub and sub-sub lords of the nine bodies matched ours and Swiss Ephemeris's. Its house cusps sit a near-constant offset from Swiss Ephemeris's, close to the nutation in longitude, a few arcseconds, so near a sub boundary its cusp lords can differ from ours.

What this checks, and what it does not
  • Agreement with Swiss Ephemeris verifies the calculation: the positions, the cusps and the lords.
  • It says nothing about whether KP interpretation or prediction is valid.
  • The birth-time margins show how the tables change with the birth time. They are not a confidence interval and not rectification, and they do not show that the rest of the chart stays the same.

The method, and where each rule comes from

Each rule is labelled: direct where the research found it stated by Krishnamurti, derived where it follows by arithmetic or analogy, ours where it is a choice the sources do not make, and omitted where we know of a rule and do not apply it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my KP chart differ from my kundli?

Three settings differ. KP uses Krishnamurti's ayanamsa, about 6 arcminutes smaller than the Lahiri ayanamsa most kundli calculators use, so every KP longitude is a few arcminutes larger. KP uses Placidus houses, which are unequal and start at their cusps, where a kundli usually uses whole-sign houses, so a planet can sit in a different house. And KP reads each cusp's star, sub and sub-sub lords, which a kundli does not show at all. The settings check on this page lists which lords of your chart change on Lahiri.

What is a sub lord in KP astrology?

Each nakshatra of 13 degrees 20 minutes is cut into nine subs in the proportions of the Vimshottari dasha, a lord's years out of 120, starting from the star's own lord: Ketu's sub is 7/120 of the star (46 minutes 40 seconds) and Venus's 20/120 (2 degrees 13 minutes 20 seconds). The planet that rules the sub a point falls in is its sub lord. KP practitioners read a house mainly through the sub lord of its cusp, which is why this page shows every cusp's sub lord and how long it holds.

How is the sub-sub lord calculated?

The same way, one level down: each sub is cut into nine parts in the Vimshottari proportions, starting from the sub's own lord, and the lord of the part a point falls in is its sub-sub lord. Where a sign boundary falls inside a sub, the parts run on across it rather than starting again. The worked lookup under your chart shows every step for your Ascendant.

Which ayanamsa does this KP calculator use?

Krishnamurti's ayanamsa as Swiss Ephemeris defines it (its No. 5), about 22 degrees 22 minutes in 1900 and carried forward by precession. It reproduces the table Krishnamurti printed within his arcminute rounding. Its value for your birth date is shown with your chart, as a mean value, with the value including nutation beside it. Other KP variants are not offered.

How exact does my birth time need to be?

As exact as you have it. A sub spans from 40 arcminutes (the Sun's sub) to 2 degrees 13 minutes 20 seconds (Venus's), and the Ascendant moves about a degree every four minutes on average, so the Ascendant's sub lord can change within a few minutes and a sub-sub lord within seconds. This calculator takes seconds, and for every cusp it shows how much earlier or later the birth time would have to be for the sub lord to change, found from the actual motion of that cusp rather than an average.

Can I use this KP calculator without a birth time?

Not for the cusps. A cusp moves about a degree every four minutes, so without a birth time its sign, star and sub lords, and every house built on them, are unknown. The planets' star and sub lords change much more slowly, except the Moon's, but this page computes a full KP chart and needs the time.

What are significators in KP astrology?

The planets that signify a house, at four levels, strongest first: (A) the planets in the stars of the house's occupants, (B) its occupants, (C) the planets in the star of its owner, and (D) its owner, the lord of its cusp's sign. This page lists them by house and by planet. Rahu and Ketu also act as agents: a node takes on the houses of the planets conjoined with it, then of its sign lord, then of its star lord.

What are ruling planets in KP?

The planets ruling the moment a question is judged: the day lord (the weekday runs from sunrise to sunrise), the lords of the Lagna's sign and star, and the lords of the Moon's sign and star, at the moment and place of judgment, with Rahu or Ketu counted when it sits in a sign one of them owns. This page computes them for this moment at a place you pick, and for the birth moment as a comparison.

Why do two KP programs give different tables?

Usually a setting, not an error. The ayanamsa: programs offer different KP variants, and Lahiri sits minutes of arc away. The node: this page uses the mean node; a true-node setting can differ from it by up to about 1.9 degrees. The houses: a cusp at the start of its house, as here, or in its middle. The day lord: a day from sunrise to sunrise, as here, or from midnight. The dasha: 365.25-day years here, with dates on the birthplace's calendar. Near a boundary, a few arcseconds of difference in any input can change a sub or sub-sub lord, which is why this page marks every value within its numerical uncertainty of a boundary with every candidate.

What does the time beside each cusp's sub lord mean?

The time change to the nearest sub-lord boundary, holding the place and settings fixed: how many minutes earlier or later the birth would have to be for that cusp's sub lord to change, found by solving for the moment the cusp reaches the boundary within two hours either way. It is an estimate under these settings, rounded toward zero. It is not a confidence interval and not birth-time rectification, and it does not show that the rest of the chart stays the same.

Does this calculator predict events?

No. It computes the tables KP practitioners read, and explains how they read them, without verdicts, predictions or remedies. Its accuracy against Swiss Ephemeris shows that the calculation is right; it is not evidence that KP's predictions work.

Is this KP calculator free and private?

Yes. The calculation runs in your browser and the birth details you enter are never sent to any server. No signup, no account, and every table on the page is free.
