The Shashtiamsa is the sixtieth harmonic, and with it DesiUtils now publishes all sixteen vargas of the Shodasavarga - the complete set of divisional charts described in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Where the birth chart (D1) maps the whole life, each varga re-reads the same positions at a finer resolution, and at half a degree per segment the D60 is the finest of them all.
Like every varga, the D60 is a derived chart: it takes each planet’s exact sidereal longitude from the birth chart and re-maps it. Nothing new is observed in the sky. Because its segments are so narrow, the D60 is also the chart where an imprecise birth time does the most damage - which is why the birth-time margin is computed for your chart rather than quoted as a family average.
Applied in verse order for an odd sign and in reverse for an even one (Ch. 6, 40). Several names repeat deliberately - Ghora at 1 and 34, Deva at 3 and 25, Kala at 15, 32 and 44, Amrita at 17, 38 and 57, Komala at 20 and 46, Saumya at 45 and 54 - and those repeats are in the text, not a transcription slip. These are traditional names only; the verse attaches benefic/malefic weight to them in Ch. 6, 41, which this tool reports as tradition and does not treat as prediction.
Segment 57 is a disclosed fork. We print Amrita; one witness prints Sudha in its numbered table while reading amrita in its own verse and word-split, so this is an internal inconsistency within a single source rather than a disagreement between sources, and secondary lists preserve both lineages. Changing that slot changes which names repeat, which is why it is disclosed rather than quietly picked.
The ascendant crosses one shashtiamsa in about two minutes of clock time on average at Indian latitudes - the fastest-moving varga Lagna we publish, ahead of the Akshavedamsa (D45) at ~2.7 minutes and the Khavedamsa (D40) at ~3.
We deliberately do not say “two minutes changes your D60 Lagna”. The interval varies with rising sign and latitude (oblique ascension), and your birth may sit anywhere inside its segment, so the average is not your margin. The tool computes the real distance for your chart. Separately it flags any of the seven classical grahas within about 0.01 deg of a segment edge - a band covering 4.0% of the zodiac here, the widest share of any chart we publish and widest precisely because the segment is narrowest. Rahu and Ketu are never flagged: that margin does not cover the nodes, whose uncertainty is the node model itself, nearly four whole D60 segments wide.
The varga-use verse (Ch. 7, 1-8) gives the D60 no distinct domain: it is grouped with the Akshavedamsa (D45) under “all indications”. That is the whole of the classical assignment.
Modern practice commonly reads the D60 for past-life karma and for fine-grained judgement between otherwise similar charts, and some traditions weight it heavily in rectification. Those readings are later practice, not the verse’s own wording, and we label them as such rather than presenting the two as one tradition. This tool computes the chart; it does not interpret it.

Each 30-deg sign is divided into sixty segments of half a degree, and every planet is re-mapped to a new sign based on which segment it occupies. Each segment also carries one of sixty traditional names. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra's varga-use verse gives it no distinct domain of its own - it is grouped with the D45 under 'all indications'. It is read alongside the birth chart (D1), not instead of it.
By Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra Ch. 6, 33: take the degrees a planet has traversed within its sign, multiply by two, divide by twelve, and add one to the remainder. Because the D60 counts from the natal sign itself, and the nodes sit exactly six signs apart, so that gap carries straight through and they land six D60 signs apart. This is the opposite of the D16, D20, D40 and D45, where the nodes always share a sign. The names go the other way: the nodes always share the same named shashtiamsa, because opposite signs share odd/even parity and the nodes take the same segment number, so the even-sign reversal lands them together. Both halves follow from the rule.
No, though here the arithmetic is at least tidy. Because the count starts from the natal sign and sixty divides evenly by twelve, every sign self-maps in exactly 5 of its 60 segments - 60 of the 720 sign-and-segment combinations, one twelfth, evenly spread. That is unusual in this family: the D27 shipped in the same wave does not divide evenly at all. The classical term vargottama refers to the D1/D9 correspondence, not the D60.
The normalized established lineage, with three corrections against a widely circulated English edition that truncates them: 6 Kinnara (printed 'Kindar'), 37 Sudha ('Suddh'), and 59 Bhramana, where that edition's 'Brahman' would insert a second Brahma into a list that already has one at 22. Segment 57 is a disclosed fork rather than a settled reading: we print Amrita, keeping Amrita at 17, 38 and 57 and Sudha at 37 only, and the page explains where the alternative comes from.
Yes. Shashtiamsa, Shashtyamsa, Shastiamsa and D60 all name the sixtieth divisional chart; the spelling varies between English editions of the classical texts because the Sanskrit is transliterated differently. This tool treats them as one page, and searches using any of those spellings reach this calculator.
The verse fixes the segment number but not, unambiguously, the sign to count from. The reading this tool uses counts from the natal sign, which is JHora's Parasara default and what most implementations do. The other reading takes the verse literally as sign-independent, so the result depends only on the degrees within the sign. The two agree for Aries and part company for every other sign, which is why this page shows your own planets under both rather than describing the difference in the abstract.
The mean lunar node, the same model as our Kundli. At half a degree per segment that choice carries real weight: calculators using the true node can differ by up to about 1.9 deg, which spans several D60 segments and can place a node in a different D60 sign. For the same reason the nodes are never flagged for boundary proximity on this page - the measured ephemeris margin covers the seven classical grahas and does not extend to a computed convention like the node.
Only with caution, and this tool is built to let you judge that rather than leaving it implicit. It computes how far your entered time sits from the nearest D60 Lagna boundary and reports that distance in minutes. If the margin is small, treat the D60 Lagna and its whole house framework as uncertain: at half a degree per segment, a time rounded to the nearest five minutes can move the Lagna by more than one sign. A birth time recorded to the minute is itself a rounding, so some of this remains even then.
