How each number is calculated

Mulank (driver / root number) reduces only the day of your birth to a single digit. Born on the 15th: 1 + 5 = 6. Born on the 29th: 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2 (and 11 is noted as a master number).

Bhagyank (destiny / life-path number) adds every digit of the full date of birth and reduces. For 15-03-1990: 1 + 5 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Because it uses the whole date, the Bhagyank usually differs from the Mulank.

Lo Shu grid places each digit 1-9 of your date of birth into a fixed 3x3 magic square and shows which numbers are present, repeated, or missing. Zeroes are not placed. The calculator above shows every reduction step so you can verify the maths yourself.

What the numbers 1 to 9 mean

In Vedic numerology (ank jyotish), each single digit 1-9 is linked to one of the nine planets (Navagraha) and a set of traditionally associated qualities. Your Mulank and Bhagyank are read against this table. These are cultural associations, not statements of fact about you, and different schools describe them differently.

No.Ruling planetTraditionally associated with
1Sun (Surya)Leadership, independence, ambition, originality
2Moon (Chandra)Sensitivity, cooperation, intuition, harmony
3Jupiter (Guru)Creativity, expression, optimism, learning
4RahuDiscipline, hard work, practicality, an unconventional streak
5Mercury (Budh)Communication, adaptability, curiosity, versatility
6Venus (Shukra)Love, harmony, responsibility, an eye for beauty
7KetuIntrospection, analysis, spirituality, a private nature
8Saturn (Shani)Ambition, discipline, endurance, material drive
9Mars (Mangal)Energy, courage, drive, a strong sense of justice

Note: Vedic numerology assigns the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu to 4 and 7, where Western numerology often uses Uranus and Neptune. The master numbers 11, 22, and 33, when they appear, are read as intensified forms rather than as a plain 2, 4, or 6.

Lo Shu grid planes

The rows and columns of the Lo Shu grid are traditionally grouped into "planes". A line whose three numbers are all present in your date is read as a strength in that area (some schools call a complete line an "arrow"); a fully empty line is read as something to develop.

  • Rows: Mind / mental plane (4, 9, 2), Emotional plane (3, 5, 7), Practical plane (8, 1, 6)
  • Columns: Thought plane (4, 3, 8), Will plane (9, 5, 1), Action plane (2, 7, 6)

Plane and arrow interpretations vary between schools and are cultural belief, not established fact.

Where the methods disagree

Numerology is not standardised, so honest tools should say where traditions differ. Master numbers (11, 22, 33): some numerologists stop at these and never reduce them; others always reduce to 1-9. This tool shows the reduced digit as the primary result and surfaces the master number alongside, so you can follow either convention.

Lo Shu grid: the basic method uses only your date-of-birth digits (shown here); some schools also add the driver and conductor numbers, and the meaning assigned to a missing or repeated number varies from one school to the next. Treat every interpretation as belief, not fact.

Is numerology real?

Numerology is a belief system with a long cultural and historical tradition, including the Indian ank jyotish lineage. It is not a science: there is no scientific evidence that numbers from a date of birth or a name determine personality, luck, or destiny.

We provide this calculator for cultural and entertainment interest, with the method shown openly. We do not sell name-correction reports, gemstones, or remedies, and nothing here is medical, financial, legal, or life advice. Enjoy it for what it is, and make real decisions on real evidence.

Numerology terms in Indian languages

In Hindi, numerology is ank jyotish; the Mulank is the mulank (also spelt mulaank or moolank) and the Bhagyank the bhagyank (bhagyaank). The Lo Shu grid is the same 3x3 square across traditions. Tamil and Telugu numerology use the same date-of-birth method under local names. Whichever language you use, the arithmetic on this page is identical - the digits of your date reduced to 1-9.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mulank (Moolank) and how is it calculated?+
Mulank, also called the Moolank, driver, or root number, is the single digit you get by reducing the DAY of your birth (not the month or year). Add the digits of the date and reduce to 1-9. Someone born on the 15th has a Mulank of 1 + 5 = 6; born on the 29th, 2 + 9 = 11, then 1 + 1 = 2. It is said to describe your core nature. This tool shows every reduction step so you can follow the maths yourself.
What is Bhagyank (destiny or life-path number)?+
Bhagyank, the destiny or life-path number, is found by adding ALL the digits of your full date of birth (day, month and year) and reducing to a single digit. For 15-03-1990 that is 1 + 5 + 0 + 3 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 28, then 2 + 8 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1, so the Bhagyank is 1. The Mulank comes from the birth day alone while the Bhagyank uses the whole date, which is why the two numbers are usually different.
What is the Lo Shu grid?+
The Lo Shu grid is a fixed 3x3 magic square (every row, column and diagonal adds up to 15) used in numerology. You place each digit 1-9 of your date of birth into its cell and look at which numbers are present, repeated, or missing. Zeroes are not placed because the square has no 0 cell. The pattern of present and missing numbers is then interpreted as strengths and gaps - a belief-based reading, not a scientific measurement.
What are master numbers 11, 22 and 33 in numerology?+
When a sum reaches 11, 22, or 33 before reducing to a single digit, many numerologists treat it as a 'master number' with special significance and leave it unreduced. Traditions differ on whether to keep or reduce them. This tool always shows the reduced single digit (1-9) as the primary number, but if an 11, 22, or 33 appears along the way it is surfaced alongside and never hidden, so you can follow whichever convention you prefer.
What do missing or repeated numbers in the Lo Shu grid mean?+
In Lo Shu interpretation a number missing from your date of birth is usually read as an area to develop, and a repeated number as an emphasised trait. Different schools assign different meanings to each number and to the rows, columns and diagonals (sometimes called planes or arrows). Because these meanings vary by tradition and are not scientifically established, treat them as cultural interpretation rather than fact.
What is the difference between Mulank and Bhagyank?+
The Mulank (root or driver number) comes only from the DAY of birth, while the Bhagyank (destiny or life-path number) comes from the FULL date of birth. Two people born on the same day of different months or years share a Mulank but usually have different Bhagyanks. In Hindi these are mulank and bhagyank (part of ank jyotish); Tamil and Telugu numerology use the same date-based method with local names.
Is numerology scientifically proven?+
No. Numerology is a belief system of cultural and historical interest, not a science. There is no scientific evidence that numbers derived from a date of birth or name determine personality or destiny. This calculator is provided for cultural and entertainment interest only - it does not give medical, financial, legal, or other professional advice, and you should not make important life decisions based on it.
Is my date of birth saved anywhere?+
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. The date you enter is never sent to a server, stored, or tracked, and refreshing the page clears everything.
