The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in is the central application hub for many Government of India schemes spanning Pre-Matric, Post-Matric, top-class, merit-cum-means, and minority-specific scholarships - the exact list of participating schemes varies each cycle. State-run portals like UP Scholarship, MahaDBT, Karnataka SSP and others handle state-specific welfare schemes - always apply through the official portal listed for your state, never through third-party paid agents.

Deadlines change every cycle for the 2025-26 academic year and renewals are not automatic. Most NSP and state schemes are disbursed via Aadhaar-linked Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), so Aadhaar seeding to your bank account is mandatory along with an income certificate from the past financial year and a bonafide certificate from your institution.

For international scholarships, any outward remittance for tuition or living expenses generally falls under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), with a $250,000 annual cap and TCS rules that depend on the remittance amount and purpose. Tax reporting of scholarship income, foreign bank accounts and foreign assets depends on your residential status and the type of return you file - check the current ITR instructions or consult a qualified CA before you file.
