What is CGPA?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a credit-weighted summary of academic performance on a fixed point scale, typically 10 in India. Letter grades (O, A+, A, B+, B, C, D) map to grade points (10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4) on the 10-point scale, and each semester's SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is computed as the credit-weighted average of subject grade points. The CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semester SGPAs across the programme.
CGPA was introduced in Indian schools by CBSE under the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) reform in 2010, and Indian universities then adopted CGPA-style grading under their Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) regulations. The point scale, the conversion formula to percentage, and the applicable cohort all vary by university and by regulation year, which is why a single "CGPA to percentage" formula does not exist.
CGPA full form and the meaning of grade points
CGPA = Cumulative Grade Point Average. The "cumulative" piece is what distinguishes it from SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average): SGPA covers a single semester, CGPA covers all completed semesters of the programme. A grade point is the numerical value assigned to a letter grade for the purpose of computing averages - O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, D = 4 on the standard Indian 10-point scale, with E (5) and F (0) sometimes used for borderline or fail grades depending on the regulation.
Universities that use a 7-point scale (some traditional regulations) or a 4-point scale (US-style mapping) compute CGPA the same way; only the maximum grade point and the conversion-to-percentage formula change. The calculator above respects each profile's scale - the listed 10-point profiles include CBSE Class IX/X, VTU, Anna University R2013 / R2017, KTU, JNTUH / JNTUA / JNTUK, and MAKAUT; the generic-10pt fallback is for when none of the listed profiles apply.
How to calculate CGPA from semester grades
CGPA is a credit-weighted average: CGPA = sum(credit hours × grade point) / sum(credit hours), computed across every subject across every completed semester. For a single semester (which gives the SGPA), the same formula applies but summed over just that semester's subjects.
Worked example. Five subjects with credits [4, 3, 4, 3, 2] and grade points [9, 8, 7, 9, 8]: weighted sum = 36 + 24 + 28 + 27 + 16 = 131. Total credits = 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 16. CGPA = 131 / 16 = 8.19 (rounded to 2 decimal places). Converting this to percentage requires picking your university profile - 8.19 at JNTUH gives (8.19 - 0.5) × 10 = 76.9%, at KTU gives (8.19 - 0.25) × 10 = 79.4%, and under the generic 10-point fallback gives 8.19 × 9.5 = 77.8%.
Use the Weighted CGPA section inside the calculator above to enter your subjects row by row. The calculator computes the weighted GPA as you type and shows the running total; once you have your CGPA, switch back to the main converter and pick your university profile for the percentage equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is CGPA full form?+
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a 10-point (or in some scales 4-point or 7-point) summary of academic performance across all completed semesters, computed as a credit-weighted average of grade points. CBSE introduced CGPA for Class IX and X under the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) reform; Indian universities then adopted CGPA-style grading under their CBCS regulations. The exact formula that converts a CGPA back to a percentage differs by university and by scheme - this page surfaces the official formula for each shipped profile.
How to convert CGPA to percentage?+
First identify which profile applies to you: school CGPA (CBSE Class IX/X CCE indicative equivalence uses 9.5 × CGPA), or your specific university's regulation (VTU 2015/17/18 uses (CGPA - 0.75) × 10; JNTUH R22 uses (CGPA - 0.5) × 10; JNTUK R20 uses (CGPA - 0.75) × 10; KTU uses (CGPA - 0.25) × 10; Anna R2013/R2017 uses CGPA × 10). Pick your profile in the selector above, enter your CGPA, and the calculator applies the official formula and shows the percentage. The Reference Table below lists common CGPA values for the selected profile.
What is the formula to convert CGPA to percentage?+
There is no single formula. Each board and university issues its own conversion rule under its own academic regulations, and many universities have changed their formula across regulation cohorts (R16 vs R22 etc.). This page ships the official formula for selected Indian boards and universities: CBSE (9.5x indicative for Class IX/X CCE), VTU 2015/17/18, Anna University R2013 + R2017, KTU, JNTU Hyderabad R16/R22, JNTU Anantapur R15/R19/R20, JNTU Kakinada R16/R19/R20, and MAKAUT. The generic 10-point fallback uses CGPA × 9.5 as the industry-standard default for situations where no specific university applies.
How to convert CGPA to percentage for VTU?+
VTU uses Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10 for the 2015, 2017, and 2018 schemes. Example: a CGPA of 8.5 converts to 77.5%. The formula is published on the official VTU portal (vtu.ac.in/en/cgpa-standard-formula/). If you are on a different VTU scheme (pre-2015 or post-2018), check your specific regulation document - the formula may differ. The calculator surfaces an applicability chip showing the scheme + faculty so you can confirm before relying on the number.
How to convert CGPA to percentage for JNTU campuses?+
JNTU campuses use different deductions. JNTU Hyderabad (R16/R22) and JNTU Anantapur (R15/R19/R20) both use Percentage = (CGPA - 0.5) × 10, so a CGPA of 8.0 converts to 75%. JNTU Kakinada (R16/R19/R20) uses the steeper Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10, so the same CGPA of 8.0 converts to only 72.5%. Switching between JNTU profiles in the selector above shows the 2.5 percentage-point difference at the same input. Verify against your specific regulation document - JNTUH in particular has issued conflicting notifications historically.
How to convert CGPA to percentage for Anna University?+
For Anna University R2013 and R2017 regulations, the formula is Percentage = CGPA × 10. So a CGPA of 8.5 converts to 85%. The university maintains that CGPA represents relative performance and is not exactly mappable to an absolute percentage, but for transcript, employment, and higher-education-application purposes the × 10 conversion is the accepted standard. Anna University R2021 is NOT yet listed in this calculator (browser-confirmation against the cac.annauniv.edu R2021 PDF is pending); if you are on R2021, use the Generic 10-point fallback for a rough estimate and treat your registrar-issued mark sheet as authoritative until R2021 is shipped in a future patch.
What is the CBSE formula for CGPA?+
CBSE describes Overall indicative percentage of marks = 9.5 × CGPA for Class IX and X under the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) framework, introduced by CBSE Circular cir24-2010 (May 2010). The same 9.5 multiplier applies per-subject to grade points (Subject-wise indicative percentage = 9.5 × GP). CBSE itself describes this as an INDICATIVE equivalence, not an authoritative percentage - the mark sheet remains the official record. The 9.5 multiplier is therefore best used for resume estimates, college-application self-reporting where percentage is required, and rough comparisons, not as a replacement for the official Statement of Marks.
How to convert percentage to CGPA?+
Pick your profile in the selector above, switch the direction toggle to '% to CGPA', and enter your percentage. The calculator applies the inverse of the official formula. For piecewise profiles (which are deferred to v1.1 patch) the reverse conversion can have ambiguous ranges near the discontinuity boundary - if that applies the calculator surfaces both candidate CGPAs. For straightforward linear profiles the reverse direction is unambiguous within the profile's reverse-input domain (clamped warnings fire if you enter an out-of-range percentage).
What is the difference between CGPA and percentage?+
Percentage is the proportion of total marks scored (e.g. 750/1000 = 75%). CGPA is a credit-weighted summary on a fixed point scale - typically 10 in India - that reflects qualitative performance across semesters rather than raw marks. The conversion from CGPA to percentage involves a multiplier (and sometimes a subtraction) that varies by university because each university tunes the formula based on how its grading bands were calibrated. Two students with the same CGPA at different universities can have different equivalent percentages, and a recruiter who treats CGPA as percentage by 'multiplying by 10' may misread either student.
How is CGPA calculated from semester grades?+
CGPA is a credit-weighted average: CGPA = sum(credit hours × grade point) / sum(credit hours), across all completed semesters' subjects. The 'Weighted CGPA calculator' section below the main converter lets you enter rows of credit hours and grade points, computes the weighted average, and shows total credits. Most Indian universities use a 10-point grade-point scale (O/A+/A/B+/B/C/D for grades, mapped to 10/9/8/7/6/5/4 grade points respectively). After computing your weighted CGPA you can then convert it to a percentage above using whichever profile applies to your university.
How do I use the weighted CGPA calculator on this page?+
Scroll to the Weighted CGPA section below the main converter. Enter your subjects one row at a time: for each subject, type the credit hours (often 2, 3, or 4 depending on the course) and the grade point you earned (on the 10-point scale: O=10, A+=9, A=8, B+=7, B=6, C=5, D=4). The calculator computes weightedGpa = sum(credit × grade) / total credits as you type and shows the running result. Use Add row for more subjects; Reset clears all rows. Once you have your weighted CGPA, switch to the main converter above and pick your university profile to see the percentage equivalent.
Why does my friend's CGPA give a different percentage than mine at the same number?+
Because different universities use different formulas. Two students who both score CGPA 8.0 can end up with different equivalent percentages: 80% at Anna University R2013/R2017, 77.5% at KTU, 75% at JNTUH or JNTUA, 72.5% at JNTUK or MAKAUT, 76% under the generic 10-point fallback (or under CBSE indicative). Pick the profile that matches your university and regulation cohort - the applicability chip on the result tells you which scheme + faculty + valid-years the chosen profile applies to so you can sanity-check the fit before using the number.
Can my actual mark sheet percentage differ from what this tool shows?+
Yes. The mark sheet is the registrar's official record. The conversion formula on this page produces an estimate based on the university's published rule; real mark sheets can differ because of re-evaluation, bonus marks, internal assessment adjustments, re-totalling after grace marks, or supplementary exam results. For job applications, study-abroad SOPs, or any other formal use, treat the official mark sheet (or a registrar-issued conversion certificate) as authoritative. This tool is best used for quick estimates, resume drafts, and self-checking your understanding of the formula.

Indicative conversion, not an official record
Each profile applies the conversion formula published by the relevant board or university for the specified scheme and faculty. Real mark sheets can differ from the formula output because of re-evaluation, bonus marks, internal assessment adjustments, grace marks, or supplementary results. For job applications, study-abroad SOPs, or any other formal use, the registrar-issued Statement of Marks (or a registrar-issued conversion certificate) is the authoritative record. JNTU campuses and Anna University in particular have issued contradicting notifications historically; verify against your specific regulation document before relying on the number.
