When do you need Unicode to KrutiDev?

Most of the time you want to go the other way - old KrutiDev text into modern Unicode that works everywhere. But some older workflows have not moved to Unicode and still expect text in the legacy KrutiDev font: legacy DTP and page-layout files, certain government typing and printing systems, and publishing setups built around KrutiDev. For those, you start from Unicode Hindi (from Word, a website, or WhatsApp) and convert it back to KrutiDev so the old system can use it.

Remember that Mangal is a Unicode font, so "Mangal to KrutiDev" means the same thing as "Unicode to KrutiDev". If your target already accepts Unicode, you do not need this tool - use Unicode directly.

How to convert Unicode to KrutiDev

  1. Copy your Unicode (Mangal) Hindi text and paste it into the left box above. It displays normally as Hindi.
  2. The KrutiDev version appears in the right box instantly - it will look like jumbled English letters, which is exactly what KrutiDev text is.
  3. Click Copy KrutiDev, paste it into your document or application, and set the font to KrutiDev (Kruti Dev 010 or 011). It now displays as Hindi.

No text is uploaded at any step; the conversion runs entirely on your device.

How accurate is the conversion?

The Unicode-to-KrutiDev mapping is derived from the same MIT-licensed SIL International KrutiDev 011 table as our KrutiDev to Unicode tool. Because the two directions share one validated source, we can check the reverse with an automated round-trip test: take Unicode text, convert it to KrutiDev, convert it back, and confirm the original Unicode is recovered. The tricky parts - the chhoti-i matra and reph moving to their KrutiDev positions, and conjuncts mapping to the right glyphs - are covered by these tests. Joiner characters (ZWJ / ZWNJ) used for half-forms may differ harmlessly between the two encodings, so always proofread important documents after converting.

Common issues and tips

  • The output looks like English letters. That is expected - KrutiDev stores Hindi as Latin characters. It becomes Hindi only when you apply the KrutiDev font (Kruti Dev 010 or 011) to it.
  • It still does not display as Hindi after pasting. The KrutiDev font is not installed or not selected there. Install Kruti Dev 010 / 011, select the pasted text, and set that font.
  • For DTP and design tools (InDesign, PageMaker, CorelDRAW) and older printing systems, paste the KrutiDev output and apply the KrutiDev font, then proofread conjuncts and matras before printing.
  • Going to the web, Word, or mobile instead? You do not need KrutiDev there - keep the text in Unicode. Use this tool only when a specific legacy system requires the KrutiDev format.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Unicode to KrutiDev conversion?+
It converts modern Unicode (Mangal) Hindi text into the legacy KrutiDev font encoding. Some older systems - DTP and page-layout software, printers, and government or publishing workflows built around KrutiDev - still need text in the KrutiDev format. This tool takes standard Unicode Hindi and produces KrutiDev text you can paste into those systems.
How do I convert Unicode to KrutiDev?+
Paste your Unicode (Mangal) Hindi text into the left box. The KrutiDev version appears in the right box instantly. Copy it, then paste it into your document or application and set the font to KrutiDev (Kruti Dev 010 or 011) to see it display as Hindi.
Why does the KrutiDev output look like English letters?+
Because KrutiDev is a legacy font that stores Hindi as Latin / ASCII characters. The output only looks like Hindi once it is shown in the KrutiDev font. In any normal font - including the output box here - it appears as jumbled English letters and symbols, which is exactly what KrutiDev text is at the data level.
Where do I need KrutiDev text?+
Mainly in older workflows that have not moved to Unicode: legacy DTP and design files, some government typing and printing systems, and publishing setups built around the KrutiDev font. If your target accepts Unicode, you do not need this - use Unicode directly. Convert to KrutiDev only when a specific old system requires it.
Is the conversion accurate?+
Yes. The mapping is derived from the same MIT-licensed SIL KrutiDev 011 table as our KrutiDev to Unicode tool, and every conversion is checked by an automated round-trip test (convert to KrutiDev, convert back, and confirm the original Unicode is recovered). Always proofread important documents after converting.
Is it free and private?+
Yes. It is completely free with no signup, and the conversion runs entirely in your browser - your text is never uploaded, stored, or tracked.
Can I convert KrutiDev back to Unicode?+
Yes - use the KrutiDev to Unicode converter for the reverse direction. Most people need that one (moving old KrutiDev documents to modern Unicode); this Unicode to KrutiDev tool is for the less common case of feeding Unicode text into a legacy KrutiDev system.
Why doesn't the converted text show as Hindi in my document?+
Because the KrutiDev font is not installed or not selected there. The conversion is correct, but KrutiDev text only displays as Hindi in the KrutiDev font. Install Kruti Dev 010 or 011, select your pasted text, and apply that font - it will then read as Hindi. In any other font it shows as Latin letters, which is normal for KrutiDev.
Does it work with InDesign, PageMaker, CorelDRAW and printing software?+
Yes. Those legacy DTP and design tools are the main reason people still need KrutiDev. Convert your Unicode Hindi here, paste the KrutiDev output into the layout, and set that text to the KrutiDev font. Always proofread the result - especially conjuncts and matras - before sending to print.
Which KrutiDev version does the output use - 010 or 011?+
The output is built for Kruti Dev 011, which is byte-compatible with Kruti Dev 010 for the vast majority of characters. In practice you can apply either Kruti Dev 010 or 011 to the converted text and it will display correctly; pick whichever your document or system already uses.
Is there a limit on how much text I can convert?+
No. Paste a word, a paragraph, or a whole document - it all converts at once in your browser, with nothing uploaded. For a very large file you can convert it in sections if your browser feels slow.
