The panchang day here runs from this date's sunrise to the next sunrise (not midnight to midnight), so the first row of each table usually began before sunrise - its start then carries the previous date - and the last row usually runs past the next sunrise. Rows crossing midnight show the next date explicitly. Times are for the selected city and round to the nearest local-clock minute, ties to the later minute.
Different panchang sites can print the same boundary a minute or two apart: display rounding conventions differ between sites, and published tables carry their own offsets. Our boundaries come from the ephemeris and conventions stated under “Sources and method” below, and we show the convention rather than matching any one almanac.
Tithi is the Moon-Sun separation in 12-degree steps; Karana is its 6-degree half step; Nakshatra is the Moon's sidereal (Lahiri) position in 13 deg 20 min mansions; Yoga is the combined Sun + Moon motion in the same step; Vaara is the weekday, which changes at local sunrise, not midnight. The engine samples apparent geocentric Sun and Moon longitudes on the TT time scale and bisects each boundary to the second, then rounds for display.
Sunrise and sunset are computed with the same Meeus-style engine as our Rahu Kaal, Abhijit Muhurat and Choghadiya tools. The whole calculation runs for the city you pick - a panchang cast for Delhi is not your panchang unless you are in Delhi, which is why the city is named beside every heading.

Panchang means “five limbs” (pancha anga). It is the traditional Hindu almanac line for a day: which lunar day (Tithi) is running, which mansion the Moon occupies (Nakshatra), the Sun-Moon combination (Yoga), the half-tithi (Karana), and the weekday (Vaara). Festival dates, muhurta selection and the Hindu calendar itself are all read off these five.
Four of the five are continuous astronomical quantities that change at exact instants - a tithi does not belong to a date, it runs from one moment to another, often starting the previous afternoon and ending mid-morning. That is why this page shows each changing anga as a table of periods with explicit start and end times rather than a single value, including the period that was already running at sunrise and the one still running at the next sunrise.
In Vedic reckoning the day - and with it the Vaara and the calendar date - changes at local sunrise, not at civil midnight. A 3 AM moment on a civil Tuesday still belongs to the Vedic Monday. This page's tables therefore cover the span from your date's sunrise to the next sunrise, and rows that cross civil midnight carry the next date explicitly so a 12:45 AM boundary cannot be misread.
The same sunrise rule governs our Kundli birth-panchang and Shadbala calculations, so DesiUtils never shows you two different weekdays for one moment. Sunrise itself also anchors the daily muhurta windows - Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya and Abhijit Muhurat - which this page links out to rather than duplicating.
Anga boundaries are global instants, but your clock time for them depends on your timezone, and the panchang DAY depends on your local sunrise. Sites that serve one city's panchang to every visitor by default can put a boundary on the wrong side of sunrise for you - which flips the tithi your calendar date is named after. We measured exactly this failure on a leading site: a Hyderabad search answered with New Delhi's times.
This page's default is Delhi and it says so beside every table; the moment you pick your city, everything recomputes from your sunrise and is labelled with your city's name. If you are comparing against a printed almanac, check which city it was cast for first.

Tithi is the angular separation of the Moon from the Sun in 12-degree steps - 30 tithis per lunar month across the bright (Shukla) and dark (Krishna) fortnights. Nakshatra is the Moon's position among 27 sidereal mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. Yoga is the SUM of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes divided into the same 27 steps. Karana is half a tithi - 6 degrees of separation - with 7 repeating and 4 fixed names across the month. Each runs its own course, so each gets its own start-end table on this page.
Two reasons. The angas themselves are global instants - a tithi ends at the same moment everywhere - but the CLOCK TIME of that moment depends on your timezone. More importantly, the panchang DAY is anchored to your local sunrise: the vaara changes at sunrise, and the tithi running at your sunrise labels your Hindu calendar date. Sunrise in Mumbai is about half an hour later than Kolkata, so the same moment can fall on different panchang days in different cities. A panchang cast for Delhi is not your panchang unless you are in Delhi.

Sites round or truncate to the minute differently, and published almanac labels carry their own offsets - we measured a leading almanac's published labels sitting up to about a minute and a half from the ephemeris-derived instant for the same boundary. Our times come from apparent geocentric Sun and Moon longitudes on the TT time scale with the Lahiri ayanamsa, bisected to the second and rounded to the nearest local-clock minute (ties later). We state the convention instead of tuning to match any one almanac.
Any city in our list, for dates from 1900-01-02 to 2032-12-30. The limits are measured: they are the dates for which the sunrise and next-day sunrise this tool consumes stay inside the span where our solar and delta-T data is accuracy-checked. At extreme polar latitudes the tool refuses dates where the sun does not rise and set, or where the next sunrise is more than one rotation away, instead of fabricating a day.
They are daily muhurta windows derived from the same sunrise and sunset that anchor the panchang, but they are separate systems layered on top of it. This page keeps the five angas; our dedicated Rahu Kaal, Choghadiya and Abhijit Muhurat tools compute those windows for the same cities from the same solar engine.
Largely yes, with regional conventions. Most festival rules key on which tithi is current at a reference moment - often sunrise, sometimes midday or moonrise - which is why two regions can celebrate the same festival a day apart, and why the same lunar month can start on two dates under different conventions.
