When to Use JPEG, PNG, or WebP

Each image format has strengths and trade-offs. Choosing the right one depends on what the image contains and where it will be used.

  • JPEG - best for photographs and images with complex colour gradients. Uses lossy compression, which permanently discards some data to reduce file size. Does not support transparency.
  • PNG - best for logos, screenshots, UI elements, and graphics with sharp edges or text. Uses lossless compression, so the original data is fully preserved. Supports transparency (alpha channel).
  • WebP - supports both lossy and lossless compression, plus transparency. Generally produces smaller files than JPEG or PNG for similar quality. Supported by all modern browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari.

Lossy vs Lossless Compression

Lossy compression permanently removes some image data to achieve smaller file sizes. The original cannot be recovered. JPEG uses lossy compression. Each time you re-save a JPEG, quality degrades slightly.

Lossless compression reduces file size without any data loss. The original image can be perfectly reconstructed. PNG uses lossless compression. WebP supports both modes.

Quick Format Guide

  • Product photo for a website - use JPEG or WebP (lossy)
  • Logo or icon with transparent background - use PNG or WebP (lossless)
  • Screenshot with text - use PNG for sharpness
  • Web performance - use WebP where possible for the best size-to-quality ratio
  • Archival or editing - keep the source as PNG, convert to JPEG or WebP for distribution

Frequently Asked Questions

What image formats can I convert between?+
This tool converts between JPEG, PNG, and WebP formats. Upload one or more images and select the target format. All conversion happens in your browser.
When should I use JPEG vs PNG vs WebP?+
JPEG is best for photographs (lossy, no transparency). PNG is best for logos, screenshots, and graphics with transparency (lossless). WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and generally produces smaller files than either.
What is the difference between lossy and lossless compression?+
Lossy compression permanently removes some image data to reduce file size - the original cannot be recovered. JPEG uses lossy compression. Lossless compression reduces file size without any data loss - the original can be perfectly reconstructed. PNG uses lossless compression.
Does WebP work in all browsers?+
As of 2026, WebP is supported by all current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. It is effectively universal for modern browsers. It is not supported in Internet Explorer, which is discontinued.
Does converting to PNG preserve transparency?+
Yes. PNG supports full alpha-channel transparency. If your source image has a transparent background (e.g. a logo), converting to PNG preserves it. JPEG does not support transparency.
Is my image uploaded to a server?+
No. All conversion happens entirely in your browser. Your images are never sent anywhere.
